Wally 80 Sailboat Review

Wally 80 Sailboat Review 3luxe best of

Wally 80
Sailing is one of life’s great adventures, but it can be frustrating when you have to rustle up a crew every time you want to hit the water. Leave the rest of the crew on land if you want with the Wally 80. The advanced Wally 80 features hydraulic rams that position the sails to allow you to sail this 80-footer by yourself. Want to trim the sails from somewhere other than the foot buttons at the wheel? Grab your hand-held remote control unit that can be plugged in at several points around this “Best Of’s” deck. Another great feature of the Wally 80 is the lack of dangerous “toe stubbers” on the single-level teak deck. Everything from the deck hatches to the track for the jib is flush with the deck, resulting in a look that’s as elegant as it is safe. The hull is constructed of a composite PVC sandwich of Kevlar, carbon fibers and epoxy resin for a strong and lightweight clipper.

FEATURES
  • It is most impressive for what it doesn't have: the usual clutter of winches, blocks, wires, ropes and other tackle found on conventional sailing yachts. From bow to stern, the single-level deck is an expanse of unblemished teak.
  • More importantly, however, are two sets of black buttons set into the teak deck behind each steering wheel. At the touch of a deck shoe, these control hydraulic rams that position the sails, allowing the helmsman to adjust the sails, and even tack back and forth without anyone's help. You can literally sail this 80-footer by yourself.
  • Walking around on deck, you'll notice that all the "toe-stubbers" are absent. Everything from the deck hatches to the track for the jib are flush with the deck, resulting in a look that is as elegant as it is safe. Want to trim the sails from somewhere other than the foot-buttons at the wheels? A hand-held remote control unit can be plugged in at several points around the deck.
  • The entire transom hinges outward to open a spacious "garage" area under the cockpit where the inflatable yacht tender is stored and where there is a teak planked swim platform and access to sporting gear such as scuba tanks or sailboards.
  • Equally simple and luxurious. Interior designer Tommaso Spadolini created a bright and airy decor, using light ash paneling on the gently curved bulkheads, with large open spaces and softly upholstered built-in seating.
  • The hull is constructed of a composite PVC sandwich, using Kevlar, carbon fibers and epoxy resin in a laminate that is then vacuum-bagged and post-cured at a high temperature. The result is exceptionally strong and light, with classification by the American Bureau of Shipping at their highest rating: 100 A1-Malta Cross.
